Spelling Rule
This week we are learning about adding the suffixes -al and -ic.
Key learning points
- The suffixes -al and -ic create adjectives.
- When the root word ends in a consonant, usually just add the suffix.
- When the root word ends in ‘e’, remove the ‘e’ and add the suffix.
- When the root word ends in 'y', remove the 'y' and add the suffix -ic.
- How to spell the curriculum words: physical, natural and actual.
Common misconception
Pupils may use 'ck' to representing the 'c' phoneme at the end of the word after a short vowel, like 'stick' and 'trick'.
Explain that in most words where the 'c' is at the end, it is represented as 'ck'. As this is a suffix, it doesn't follow usual rules. If we can spot a root word, and know that the new word is an adjective it will most likely be spelt 'ic'.
